National park reservations: what to check before booking

One confirmation rarely answers every question about getting into a park and doing what you came for.

Start a reservation check with your route and activities, not a pass purchase. An entrance pass, a vehicle reservation, a room and an activity booking solve different problems. Requirements can change between years and between areas of the same park, so last year's itinerary is not proof that this year's access is arranged.

For first-time visitors and anyone planning a trip around a particular road, summit, campsite or scheduled activity.

01

Keep four different questions on your checklist

Use separate lines for each part of the trip. Mark 'not required' only after checking the park's current official guidance; do not leave an empty box and assume another booking covers it.

  • Entry payment: which entrance pass or fee applies to your party and residency status?
  • Access: does your road, entrance or area require a timed or vehicle reservation?
  • Overnight stay: is your room or campsite confirmed for the correct dates?
  • Activity: does the specific tour, hike, boat trip or other experience require its own permit or ticket?
02

Read exactly what a reservation covers

Acadia's Cadillac Summit Road is a useful example. The NPS page separates a vehicle reservation for that road from the park entrance pass. It also explains that the road reservation does not reserve an individual parking space. Check the current season dates and vehicle restrictions before selecting a time.

Yosemite illustrates why old advice needs checking. As reviewed on October 23, 2026, its official entrance-reservation page says a general timed-entry reservation is not required in 2026. That statement concerns entry; it does not book your lodging or authorize a separately regulated activity. Recheck the official policy for any later travel year.

03

Make a small record for each required booking

Record the official booking link, travel date, area covered, booking-release date and time zone, party or vehicle details, and cancellation terms. Confirm any identification requirement. Use the link from NPS rather than choosing a booking site solely from a search advertisement. Keep the actual confirmation somewhere you can open without relying on reception at the entrance.

04

Choose a fallback before paying for the rest

If the one experience you care about needs a limited reservation, decide whether you would still want the trip without it. You might choose another date, a different area or a different park. Do not assume arriving outside a booking window, holding a hotel reservation or buying an annual pass creates an exception; exceptions must be stated in the applicable park rules.

05

Check again before you travel

Review alerts, access rules and your confirmations together shortly before departure. NPS pass eligibility and charges can differ by residency, so use the current official fee information for your party rather than a remembered price. This checklist organizes the questions; the linked park and NPS pages remain the authority for the booking you actually need.
