An Arctic expedition where the map becomes a commitment.

Kobuk Valley brings together Arctic sand dunes, river country, and immense spaces with no road or established trail network to organize your visit. This is an expedition choice for travelers ready to arrange air transport, navigation, food, shelter, and emergency communication. A guided landing visit and a multiday river journey are different levels of commitment. Choose the support and destination first; solitude here comes with real responsibility.

THE HONEST TRADE-OFF

There is no easy infrastructure to fall back on when conditions change. Transport is costly, pickup can be delayed, and a scenic photograph understates the preparation required.

The moments to make room for.

01

Great Kobuk Sand Dunes

Walk among dunes in an Arctic setting only with a realistic landing and navigation plan. There are no marked visitor circuits.

02

River-scale travel

A properly planned float can reveal a broader landscape, but it requires water skills, equipment, and coordinated drop-off and pickup.

03

Arctic context before departure

The Northwest Arctic Heritage Center in Kotzebue introduces regional ecology and Iñupiaq culture before you enter the backcountry.

GOOD ON PAPER. RIGHT FOR YOU?

Let’s see how this park fits your trip.

Your timing and travel style matter as much as the view.

One day, a little more slowly.

A suggested rhythm, not a live itinerary. Check access and allow for travel between stops.

Morning

Review the field plan

For a guided dune-based expedition day, assess weather, route, water, communications, and pickup contingencies before leaving camp.

Afternoon

Explore within your limits

Follow the agreed route with your guide or appropriately skilled party. Turn around based on conditions, not a fixed sightseeing checklist.

Evening

Prepare for another day

Return to camp or the planned pickup location with reserve time and supplies. This sample day assumes a fully arranged expedition.

The details that shape the day.

Arrange qualified support

Discuss feasible landing sites, route skills, and contingency days with an authorized operator before purchasing onward connections.

Carry the complete system

Food, shelter, water treatment, navigation, and emergency communication must work without a visitor center or nearby shop.

Do not improvise winter access

A winter journey requires advanced cold-weather capability. A summer plan cannot simply be moved to another season.
